GvsB6 Spotlight: DJ Sober

Since 2005, Will Rhoten has spun some of Dallas’ hottest tracks under the moniker DJ Sober. Since its inception, the DJ Sober project has been a solid stable in Dallas’ arts and nightlife community. If that weren’t impressive enough, the DJ has spun tracks for some of Dallas’ premier sports teams, including the Mavericks, FC Dallas and the Cowboys since 2013.

Aside from that, Rhoten has made a name for himself with his weekly Thursday-night Big Bang! and The Party events, where he would entertain massive crowds with an assortment of remixes and party bangers. These events successfully united disparate cultures into a singular force, inviting acts from Smif N Wessum to Justice. In addition to that, Sober conducted promotions for Red Bull in the mid 2000s, organizing exclusive events while honing his craft on the side.

These residencies pulled in some of the nation’s best DJs, including Eli Escobar and Bladerunners. His most notable success, though, has to be his stint as a DJ for famed Dallas rap collective A.Dd+. Sober provided the cut “I’m So Dallas” on the outfit’s debut LP When Pigs Fly, and eventually toured with Still, no matter the occasion, Sober always manages to integrate his own distinctive influences.

Sober developed his skills like any other up-and-coming DJ, through regular performances at sweaty basements and house parties. Now, the DJ is as consistent as ever, releasing a prolific output of remixes on a regular basis.

His work doesn’t end there. Sober has toured the U.S. with such famed electronic veterans as the Flaming Lips and Cut Copy and even deejayed alongside ?uestlove and Pete Rock and supported Devin the Dude and Bun B.

Sober eventually transitioned into a co-producer, collaborating with Dallas’ PICNICTYME on the Booty Fade project. Pulling influence New Orleans and Baltimore’s club scene, as well as the down-at-home sounds of his hometown. The collaboration was a huge success, reaching the masses of nightclub dance floors around the world. Sober eventually remixed Erykah Badu’s “On and On” and earned the accolade of best producer and best song from the Dallas Observer with the track “F*** Like a Stripper”.

Sober was also named Dallas’ best DJ in the Observer’s year-end list in 2011 and the readers’ poll in 2012. The next year, Sober wiped away the competition, winning both the editors’ and readers’ picks for best DJ.
